A private, research-led professional community

Success should not require continual self-protection.

COBE Elevate supports Black and Global Majority professionals who are carrying the hidden cost of succeeding in workplaces where competence, credibility and belonging are not experienced equally.

Use the research to name the pattern. Access spaces to recover. Build a practical plan to protect your health, career and future.

I started the research after success began to cost me my health.

“I wanted to understand why someone with experience, qualifications and ambition would decide never to return to the workplace.”

For years, I did what many high-performing Black professionals learn to do. I prepared more. I worked harder. I stayed alert to how I spoke, how I responded and how others might interpret me. From the outside, my career showed progress. Underneath, the pressure was becoming unsustainable.

My health deteriorated. I reached a point where leaving employment felt safer than continuing to prove I deserved to be there. I spent close to a year in Jamaica resting, recovering and trying to understand what had happened. The question followed me: was this an individual experience, or part of a wider workplace pattern?

I began with 13 in-depth interviews with Black professional women. Their roles and sectors differed, but the patterns were familiar: continual proving, identity management, unequal scrutiny, stalled progression and serious effects on health. Those interviews led to a wider independent survey and the Cost of Black Excellence research programme.

The research gave people evidence. Yet evidence alone was not enough. Professionals also needed a trusted place to process what they had learned, regain clarity and decide what to do next. COBE Elevate grew from that need.

The central idea

What is the Excellence Tax?

The Excellence Tax describes the additional emotional, performance and progression costs Black and Global Majority professionals carry while pursuing success in unequal workplace conditions.

It can appear as continual proving, overpreparation, heightened visibility, identity management, unequal scrutiny, limited sponsorship and the need to recover from pressure other colleagues do not face in the same way.

COBE Elevate helps members recognise these costs without turning every difficult experience into a personal failing. The aim is clearer judgement, stronger protection and more sustainable progress.

A professional destination for clarity, recovery and progress.

COBE Elevate is built around a deliberate rhythm. Members receive enough structure to move forward without entering another overwhelming content platform.
